Out of Reykjavík by eight, behind Seljalandsfoss before the coaches arrive, Skógafoss close enough to soak your jacket, then the black sand and basalt columns at Reynisfjara. It is a long sit in a minibus for a coastline no other day trip reaches.

Jökulsárlón calves bergs into a lagoon that drains directly into the sea, where the tide shoves them back onto Diamond Beach in polished lumps. Five hours each way from the capital, so it is either a very long day or a night in Vík.

Some nights the whole sky moves.
Aurora tours run September to April and they chase the forecast, not a timetable. The coach leaves Reykjavík when the cloud map says go, sometimes an hour from town, sometimes three. Most operators put you on the next clear night free if nothing shows.
Warm water in a cold country.
The Blue Lagoon takes the postcards and the pre-flight slot. Sky Lagoon has the ocean horizon and the seven step ritual. The Secret Lagoon out at Flúðir is the oldest of the three, dug in 1891 and still fed by the same springs.
Whales, puffins and a headwind.
Boats leave Reykjavík old harbour all year and Húsavík from spring, where the bay is shallow, the humpbacks feed close in and the sighting rate is the best in the country. Take a layer more than the forecast suggests.
The whole country, one peninsula.
Snæfellsnes hands you a glacier, the black church at Búðir, seal colonies on the north shore, a lava tube you can climb down into and Kirkjufell to finish, inside about eleven hours from the city. Locals call it Iceland in miniature and they are not overselling it.
